SePRO has applied to the US EPA for approval of the fungicide ningnanmycin, which was originally isolated from the soil bacterium Streptomyces noursei var. x ichangensis by the Chengdu Institute of Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The application cites control of fungal and viral diseases on a range of crops including vine, cucurbits, pome fruits, cherries, rice, soybeans, wheat and various vegetables, as well as for seed treatment usage, and on ornamentals and turf. Ningnanmycin is manufactured in China by Heilongjiang Deqiang Biology and has been commercially available in China and Vietnam for a number of years. The product has antiviral activity against tobacco mosaic virus, reportedly through induction of systemic acquired resistance, as well as fungicidal activity against a range of diseases including wheat powdery mildew and rice bacterial leaf blight.
